"Solo"-Hunting

Coyotes are accomplished hunters. They will often hunt by themselves, leaping into the air so that they can quickly grab their prey as they land.

When two coyotes hunt together, they exhibit their intelligence by the tactics they use. As one coyote flushes the prey from hiding, another will wait to grab the meal when it does.

Deer are hunted in an entirely different way. Much like the way a wolf pack hunts, the coyotes hunt in larger numbers and then share the feast.

Here a coyote has heard something moving beneath the snow, and with the momentum from his jump and his long snout, will soon be enjoying a meal.

Coyote Pups Outside Their Den

This photo captures young coyote pups emerging from their den and starting a new day of adventure.

Based upon normal litter sizes, there are likely two or three others who will soon be joining them.

As young as these pups are, their day will be spent playing, nursing and gaining strength for the day when their mother begins to teach them to hunt.

Comfortably Curled Up In The Snow

Yosemite's Mountain Coyote is a beautiful animal. Unlike other varieties of coyote, the Mountain Coyote has a thick luxurious coat that keeps him warm in snow and cold mountain temperatures.

Roughly the same size as his cousins in other locations, his thick fur makes him seem much larger. Because of this, he is sometimes mistaken for a wolf.

With no need for better shelter than he has, the young coyote  in this picture watches his surroundings intently.

The Silent Watcher
