Yosemite Mountain Lion pictures are rare.

Mountain Lions live in Yosemite, but they are almost never seen!

To see a lion in the wilderness of Yosemite would be the thrill of a lifetime. To capture an image of the experience would be more than a photographer could even hope for.

Here on this page are some gorgeous examples of just that...

Watching Silently

Like the young bears, mountain lions head for the nearest tree when threatened. There they can effectively hide motionless if they have not been seen, watching for their opportunity to come down and disappear into the wilderness once again.

Yosemite Mountain Lion Kitten Close-up

It is easy to see the intelligence in the eyes of this little mountain lion kitten!

Still in his spotted camouflage, he will lose this coloring as he gets older and will take on a more uniform color ranging from tan to brown to almost grey.

Born in litters usually of three to four, he and his siblings are still nursing, but will be ready to begin to learn to hunt before long.

On The Hunt

Big, strong, fast, and very smart, the mountain lion is at the top of Yosemite's food chain. A big buck mule deer in his prime is the only thing that the lion will think twice about attacking for food.

Young deer and those not in herds, the weak and the sick, are prime targets for attack. In this way, the deer population is kept strong and healthy.

Much Like Your Cat At Home

A tree is always a nice safe place for lounging!

The little lion is getting bigger but still maintains his spots, for now. He is showing more signs of independence as he is weened by his mother and does not feel the need to remain as near to her.

She has begun to teach him and his brothers and sisters to hunt the smaller animals around them, and before long he will have success hunting on his own.

Big Male Mountain Lion On The Look-out

This vantage point is likely a favorite of this big male mountain lion. Not only does it provide a safe and secure "observation post" but is a warm and sunny spot to watch from.

Virtually silent when they want to be, it is easy to imaging that these big cats are often watching without a person ever being aware that they are!

Mother Mountain Lion And Her Kittens

The little mountain lion "kits" nurse frequently while they are young, gaining strength and growing quickly.

The large rocks that naturally slough from Yosemite's mountainsides provide ideal dens for many animals, and some are large enough even for the mountain lions.

Often weighing well over one hundred pounds, these are big cats and are incredibly athletic animals.

The Wildlife Photo Of A life-Time

Seeing a mountain lion in the wilds of Yosemite, is the experience of a life time! It almost never happens. Though I am tempted to say that it never happens...obviously it does for some. These pictures are the proof.

Living in Yosemite for almost 15 years, none of my family ever saw as much as a lion print!

I hope some day to ask this photographer about how he caught this mountain lion in mid-leap...clearly an astounding photo!

Mountain Lion Bath Time

The little mountain lion kittens have finished their breakfast, and now it is time for their baths.

Old fur and skin is shed, but perhaps even more importantly, bath time is a time for mother lion to provide her little lions with the nurturing that only she can give them.

A Little Mountain Lion "Peeking"

Just like your house cat at home, these little cats are curious!

They learn through exploration, though at this age they don't range far from "home". Two or three siblings add to the excitement, since there is always someone to play with nearby.

The raucous behavior that often takes place around the den, helps the little lions grow strong and agile. Sometimes mother lions plays too!

Moving Day

Whether moving to a new location or not, it is always easiest to transport the little ones in this way.

Mother lion knows what she wants done, and the kittens don't have any say in it. They will happily carry on with what ever they were doing in their old location, where ever it is that she ends up taking them!

Yosemite's Mountain Lion

You will agree that this simply an astonishing photograph!

This big lion is clearly looking at something other than the photographer, (good news), and apparently the photographer and his camera got back home afterward...also good.

This is another photograph that I would like to know much more about.

But I do know one thing...it is an amazing shot of a beautiful animal, Yosemite's Mountain Lion!!
